Haji delivered this address on behalf of Asma Ibrahim Al Mannaei, executive director of the Health Life Sciences Sector at the Department of Health, Abu Dhabi, at Gitex Global 2025 held at the Dubai World Trade Centre.

He emphasized that the Emirati Genome Programme by the Department of Health is a pivotal national initiative aimed at charting the genetic profile of UAE citizens to enable advanced, personalized, and preventive healthcare for present and future generations.

“This ranks among the world’s most extensive population-wide genome programs with more than 800,000 samples collected in Abu Dhabi. We are advancing beyond a one-size-fits-all approach towards proactive personalized care, establishing Abu Dhabi as a global center for life sciences and health innovation while offering insights that benefit patients beyond our borders,” he said, highlighting the UAE’s progress in genomics and biotechnology.

Haji noted that the Department of Health, Abu Dhabi, has initiated programs that integrate genomics into daily practice.

“These include premarital genetic screening programs covering 570 genes and over 800 conditions; the Newborn Genetic Screening Programme launched this year, focusing on early detection and intervention; The Abu Dhabi Precision Medicine Programme for oncology and cardiovascular disease, which utilizes AI to enhance cancer treatment outcomes; and the Pharmacogenetic Programme, which incorporates genetic data into prescribing practices. These initiatives promote prevention, diagnosis, and personalized treatment, equipping clinicians with precise diagnostic pathways and treatment options, thereby improving outcomes and quality of life,” he added.

During a panel discussion, Shahrukh Hashmi, director of research at the Department of Health in Abu Dhabi, noted that 85% of the local population has consented to the Emirati Genome Programme, with over 100,000 expatriates participating in the genome project.
