Libyan Red Crescent Rescues 404 Migrants in Tobruk

The Libyan Red Crescent published a statement this Thursday morning, confirming the rescue of 404 migrants who were aboard 10 boats in the coastal city of Tobruk, located in eastern Libya near the border with Egypt. The Red Crescent in the city indicated that the migrants received first aid, food, and blankets from its volunteers after being rescued.

Last Monday, the death of 10 migrants was confirmed after their boat capsized off the city of Tobruk, with 31 still missing. Six bodies were recovered on Saturday after being washed ashore by the waves.

According to data from the International Organization for Migration, at least 375 deaths or disappearances were recorded in January 2026 alone in “invisible” sinking incidents due to severe weather conditions, with estimates suggesting that hundreds more deaths went unrecorded. The number of missing in the central Mediterranean exceeded 1,300 migrants in 2025, according to the Missing Migrants Project of the organization.

The International Organization for Migration emphasized the need to strengthen international cooperation and responses that prioritize protection, to combat smuggling networks, and to provide safe and regular migration routes to save lives and reduce risks for migrants.
