The Israeli military stated on Sunday that it was investigating the crash of a drone launched from Yemen that fell in the Ramon Airport area in southern Israel.

Israeli airspace above the airport was closed to traffic, as announced by the country’s airports authority earlier on Sunday, without providing an immediate reason for the closure.

The Israeli military mentioned that the incident was under review without detailing the impact. It did not specify if the drone had fallen after interception or if it was a direct hit.

The airport, located near the resort city of Eilat on the border with Jordan and Egypt, primarily handles domestic flights.

The Iran-backed Houthis have been launching missiles and drones thousands of kilometers north towards Israel, claiming these acts as solidarity with the Palestinians.

Israel has retaliated by bombing Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen, including the crucial Hodeidah port. Its latest attack killed senior Houthi officials, including the head of the government.

The Houthis, who control the most populous regions of Yemen, have also been attacking vessels in the Red Sea since the Gaza war began in October 2023.
