Today, Thursday, “Al-Taqa” reported that China Offshore Oil Engineering Company (COOEC) has begun work on the engineering, procurement, construction, and installation contract for the development of the “Bu Haneen” field off the coast of Qatar. The offshore oil field development project is located in the Gulf, about 120 kilometers east of the Qatari coast. It is designed to extend the life of the field by addressing its production decline and doubling its current oil production rate. The platform stated that the China Offshore Oil Engineering Company described the launch of this development process as the largest international project contracted by a Chinese company to date. The “Bu Haneen” offshore field development project is considered an essential element in Qatar’s long-term strategy to enhance production from its major offshore oil fields. The Chinese company announced on October 13, 2025, the holding of meetings to launch the engineering, procurement, installation, and construction project for the development of the Bu Haneen offshore field, in Tianjin and Singapore. The project, developed by Qatar Energy, also features unprecedented scope and technical complexity, along with its record contractual value of approximately $4 billion. Estimates suggest that the Bu Haneen field reserves amount to about 1.4 billion barrels of crude oil, in addition to unspecified quantities of associated gas. With the start of commercial production, the field’s production volume was about 22,000 barrels per day, before rising in the 1990s to about 40,000 barrels per day, a level that remained stable until the end of the first decade of the current millennium.
