A catastrophic landslide in Sudan’s western Darfur has claimed the lives of over 1,000 individuals, according to a rebel group governing the region, who announced Monday evening that there was only one survivor.
The tragedy occurred on Sunday following several days of intense rainfall, devastating the village of Tarasin in the Marra mountains, as reported by the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army in a statement.
“Preliminary reports suggest the entire village population, estimated at over a thousand, perished, leaving just one survivor,” the statement revealed.

The “massive and destructive” landslide leveled the village and “completely obliterated” parts of an area known for its citrus farming.
The group has called upon the United Nations and other humanitarian organizations for assistance in recovering the deceased.
Sudan’s ongoing civil war, now in its third year, has led to one of the globe’s direst humanitarian crises, with famine declared in parts of Darfur.
Conflict has intensified in Darfur, particularly in El-Fasher, following the army’s takeover of the capital Khartoum in March.
