From its start, DMCC has remained focused on one mission: to build, enable, and connect. When Jumeirah Lakes Towers (JLT) was first envisioned over two decades ago, the aim was not merely to construct empty towers, but to develop a vibrant hub for trade and business.
This community was crafted to cater to the evolving needs of global commodities markets, unlike many real estate developers who often rely on speculation. This approach has been crucial to DMCC’s success, evident in both JLT and Uptown.
The foundation of DMCC was laid with a visionary strategy, starting with the construction of Almas, Silver, and Gold towers. Financed by a private sukuk, the project not only ensured financial independence but also showcased a commitment to sustainable growth. DMCC became the first and remains the only free zone to self-fund its vision aligning with Dubai’s ambitious goals.
Over the last 20 years, JLT and DMCC have evolved significantly. What began as a cluster of high-rise commercial towers has blossomed into a diverse community of over 100,000 residents and workers, with a vibrant soul most visible in its culinary scene. DMCC’s accolades, including being named Free Zone of the Year nine times, and contributing 15% of Dubai’s FDI, drive its growth, leading to Uptown Dubai’s development.
I recall consultants advising against such a large-scale project, doubting the demand. However, they overlooked DMCC’s role as a global leader in diamonds, gold, crypto, tech, and energy. Uptown Tower’s success proves this demand. A mixed-use tower with a 40/60 split between hotel and office space, I’m sure that if Uptown Tower’s 75 stories were all offices, it would be fully leased. Its design emphasizes connectivity and accessibility, with multiple entrances and a dog-friendly policy, reflecting our dedication to a modern, integrated community. Uptown Dubai exemplifies luxury and sustainability, with LEED Gold-certified buildings, innovative water-saving initiatives, and a focus on reducing carbon footprints, setting a standard for responsible development.
Uptown, comprising Uptown Tower, the Atrium, and Mercer House, a luxury twin-tower by Ellington, is anchored by the world’s future tallest commercial building, Burj 2020. Some get lost in the numbers and height, but as entrepreneur Ismail Al Hammadi noted, they miss the point.
“DMCC’s global presence shows its success. From international events to groundbreaking projects, its influence is real. High office occupancy and continuous developments highlight Dubai’s global business appeal.
The Burj 2020, the second supertall in Uptown Dubai, is more than its record height. It’s about a new mindset, moving from scale to an integrated, purposeful approach. It prioritizes real estate quality and commercial space functionality, meeting business needs. This focus attracts international investors and signals DMCC’s future path.”

Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Executive Chairman and CEO of DMCC
This innovative thinking defines DMCC’s strategy. Uptown Dubai and Burj 2020’s location was chosen for its proximity to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Al Maktoum International Airport (DXB). Just 15 minutes away, this aviation hub will be pivotal globally, with the building’s viewing deck offering stunning city views and a glimpse into trade’s future.
This optimism is shared by leading UAE developers. Maher Sweid, Managing Partner of Sweid & Sweid, stated, “We are confident in DMCC’s trajectory as a top destination, advancing our AED 1 billion commercial developments within the zone, led by Sweid One. Feedback from multinational firms highlights sustained demand driven by DMCC’s strategic location and business-friendly approach.”
Joseph Thomas, Co-Founder of Ellington Properties, noted, “Uptown Dubai isn’t just a landmark; it’s a bold reimagining of building communities around people and business. DMCC’s vision goes beyond iconic towers, creating a global hub where living, working, culture, and lifestyle integrate seamlessly. That uniqueness resonates internationally.
Anchored by Burj 2020, the district focuses not on scale, but on purpose—cultivating a vibrant community meeting real demand, reflecting Dubai’s global ambitions.
We’re proud Mercer House is part of this transformative development, contributing a design-led approach to a district setting new urban living, connectivity, and community standards.”
Looking ahead, DMCC’s commitment to demand-driven development is clear with the announcement of the Crypto Tower. This 17-storey landmark will serve as a hub for blockchain and Web3 companies, reinforcing Dubai’s leadership in emerging technologies. It will feature nine office floors and dedicated areas for blockchain incubators, VC firms, and AI innovation.
Every development, from initial towers to the Crypto Tower, aligns with creating a robust, visionary, and self-sufficient ecosystem. We build not to attract, but to meet demand, offering investors in JLT and now Uptown Dubai returns in capital and the chance to be part of a dynamic, forward-thinking community.
Uptown Dubai is the next step in this philosophy. It’s a district for a world where business, technology, and community merge, standing as a testament to our mission: to build communities that are tangible, prosperous, and based on real demand.
