Dubai will soon launch robotaxis, or self-driving taxis, on Sheikh Zayed Road by March of next year, as confirmed by a senior official from the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) to Khaleej Times during the Gitex Global 2025 event in Dubai.
This initiative is a significant step toward Dubai’s objective of making 25% of its transportation smart and driverless by 2030.
Currently, three Chinese companies — Baidu’s Apollo Go, WeRide, and Pony.ai — are running autonomous driving trials on roads designated by the RTA.
Khaled Al Awadhi, director of transportation systems at RTA’s public transport agency, stated to Khaleej Times, “Once any of these companies successfully complete and pass the trials in controlled open areas (Zones 1 and 2), they can advance to Zone 3, which includes Sheikh Zayed Road.”
