Each year, millions of Muslims journey to Makkah for Umrah, the minor pilgrimage. To ensure the health and safety of these pilgrims, Saudi Arabia has introduced mandatory health precautions to prevent the spread of infections.
Travelers from around the globe must comply with specific vaccination requirements, with additional mandates for those from certain countries.
Health experts in the UAE are also highlighting the crucial role of vaccinations in protecting against health risks among the large crowds gathering for Umrah.

Here’s a guide on the vaccinations required before embarking on your Umrah journey. For UAE residents, a seasonal flu shot is mandatory before Umrah.
It’s recommended to receive the flu vaccine at least 10 days before travel to build immunity. The Emirates Health Services (EHS) offers this vaccination for Dh50 at general health centers.
A vaccination card, necessary for travel, costs Dh20. Appointments for vaccinations can be scheduled via the EHS website.
Exemptions from the flu vaccine fee apply to UAE citizens, those over 50, individuals with special needs, children under 5, pregnant women, students, and healthcare workers.
Previously, Saudi Arabia required all Umrah travelers aged 1 and above to receive the meningococcal vaccine (Quadrivalent ACYW-135) at least 10 days before traveling, with a certificate valid for 3 years. However, as of Thursday, February 6, this is no longer mandatory.
If you choose to receive the vaccine, a prior consultation with a doctor, costing Dh150, is necessary. EHS health cardholders are exempt from the consultation fee. The card, valid for a year, costs Dh155 and can be obtained online.
The Saudi Ministry of Health also recommends receiving a SARS-COV-2 (Covid-19) vaccine before visiting Umrah areas, which include not just Makkah and Madinah, but also Jeddah and Taif.
Pilgrims with chronic conditions should carry documentation of their medical conditions and ensure they have enough medication in original packaging.
Regardless of travel purposes, UAE residents should keep up with necessary vaccinations before international travel.
