The Palestinian group Hamas declared on Sunday that Israel’s initiative to relocate Gaza City residents represents a “new wave of genocide and displacement” for hundreds of thousands in the region.

Hamas criticized Israel’s proposed deployment of tents and shelters in southern Gaza as a “blatant deception”.

The Israeli military announced preparations to distribute tents and equipment from Sunday, aiming to move residents from conflict areas to the southern enclave “for their safety”.

Hamas’s statement condemned the tent deployment under humanitarian pretense as a deceitful tactic to “mask a brutal crime the occupation forces plan to commit”.

Earlier this month, Israel announced plans for a new offensive to seize northern Gaza City, the enclave’s largest urban area, raising global concerns about the future of the war-torn strip home to about 2.2 million people.

The conflict began with Hamas’s attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing 1,200 individuals and capturing 251 hostages, according to Israeli figures. Around 20 of the remaining 50 hostages in Gaza are believed to survive.

Israel’s subsequent military actions against Hamas have resulted in over 61,000 Palestinian deaths, as reported by Gaza’s health ministry. The assault has also triggered a hunger crisis, displaced most of Gaza’s residents, and left much of the enclave devastated.
