Jonathan Trott has embarked on a new journey as the head coach of the Gulf Giants, eager to make his mark in the ILT20, the UAE’s IPL-inspired cricket league.
Renowned as one of the top Test batsmen for England this century, Trott has been commendably successful as Afghanistan’s head coach, steering the team to the 2024 T20 World Cup semifinals shortly after they nearly reached the ODI World Cup semifinals in India.
In a conversation with Khaleej Times, Trott expressed his enthusiasm for collaborating with the Adani Sportsline-owned Gulf Giants and aiding young UAE players in refining their skills.
Q. How thrilled are you about coaching the Gulf Giants in the fourth ILT20 season?
New ventures are always thrilling. Having coached extensively in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, I feel well-prepared to understand the local conditions. I’ve been present for many games in previous seasons and have gained a solid grasp of the competition through interactions with players and coaches.
Q. It’s remarkable for the UAE, an ICC associate member, to host such a prestigious league with star players…
Indeed, I’m excited as well. Observing Dubai’s transformation over 15 years, the competition is poised for similar growth. The UAE’s facilities are unparalleled, and as its population increases, so will the strength of its cricket team. This league provides local players the chance to learn from elite talent, enhancing their skills.
Q. Young talents like Aayan Afzal Khan are emerging in the UAE. How can they elevate their game?
Exposure at high levels is crucial for young players. Afghanistan, for instance, benefited from franchise cricket. Consistent play against top players and learning from esteemed coaches will undoubtedly improve their game. The ILT20 offers UAE players invaluable experience.
Q. Italy’s qualification for the 2026 T20 World Cup is a significant achievement. What are your thoughts?
It’s fantastic. Italy will assess their competitiveness on the international stage. Like the Netherlands, a football nation with strong club cricket, Italy’s story is inspiring. Witnessing teams like Ireland and the Netherlands succeed is always thrilling.
