Tel, a 20-year-old with dark skin, faced a wave of racist attacks after missing a penalty kick, which resulted in Paris Saint-Germain winning 4-3 following a 2-2 draw in regular time.
In an official statement, it was said, “We are disgusted by the racist abuses directed at Mathys Tel. He showed courage in taking the penalty, while cowards hid behind anonymous accounts to spread their hate.”
The club confirmed its cooperation with authorities and social media platforms to track down the perpetrators and take “maximum legal action” against them, expressing full support for the player by saying, “We stand with you, Mathys.”
It is noteworthy that Tel entered the game as a substitute in the 79th minute when Tottenham was leading 2-0, but Paris Saint-Germain managed to equalize before clinching the match via penalty kicks.
The French player joined Tottenham permanently this summer from Bayern Munich after a successful loan spell last season.
