Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol fans in London had a joyous occasion on Friday as the famous pair revealed a bronze statue of their iconic characters, Raj and Simran, from the hit film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ) by Yash Raj Films.

This is the first time an Indian film has been commemorated with a statue in Leicester Square, joining the likes of cinematic greats such as Harry Potter, Mary Poppins, Paddington, Singin’ in the Rain, and superheroes like Batman and Wonder Woman.

The statue depicts Shah Rukh and Kajol in one of the film’s unforgettable poses, which the actors reenacted during the unveiling event.

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, directed by Aditya Chopra, narrates the love story of Raj and Simran, two non-resident Indians who fall in love while traveling through Europe and India, starting their journey on a train from King’s Cross Station. Released in 1995, the film celebrated its 30th anniversary this October.

At the launch, Shah Rukh Khan expressed, “DDLJ was made with pure intentions. We aimed to narrate a tale of love, breaking barriers, and envisioning a world filled with love, which is why DDLJ continues to resonate even after 30 years! For me, DDLJ is a part of who I am, and it’s humbling to see the film and Kajol and I being cherished since its release.”

“I am grateful to the UK people and the Heart of London Business Alliance for celebrating DDLJ and honoring us with this gesture. Seeing DDLJ as the first Indian film recognized in the Scenes in the Square trail is emotional and revives numerous memories. I feel immense pride in the film’s global acceptance, and I share this moment with the entire DDLJ team, my friend and director Aditya Chopra, and the Yash Raj Films family. This is a moment I will cherish forever!”

Kajol, on what this recognition means to her, said, “It’s amazing to see Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge still receiving so much love after 30 years. Witnessing the statue unveiling in London felt like revisiting a part of our history—a story that has truly spanned generations.”
