Leading UAE investor and business figure Siddharth Balachandran has bolstered his presence in India’s capital markets by significantly boosting his investment in the National Stock Exchange of India Ltd (NSE), which is gearing up for an eagerly anticipated IPO.
Balachandran, the executive chairman and CEO of Buimerc Corporation Ltd, DIFC, and chairman of the Indian Business & Professional Council Dubai, now holds 9.315 million shares in NSE, making up approximately 0.4% of the exchange. This positions him among the top individual shareholders of India’s largest stock market. He is also the largest individual stakeholder in BSE Ltd, with a 3.01% holding. Established in 1875, BSE is Asia’s oldest stock exchange, hosting over 5,000 listed firms.
The dual holdings are noteworthy: together, NSE and BSE are the core of India’s equity markets, managing almost all trading activities in the nation. With significant stakes in both, Balachandran stands out among global investors, wielding influence in two of Asia’s major financial institutions.
Incorporated in 1992, NSE has become the world’s leading derivatives exchange by contracts and ranks third in cash equities by trade volume. By May 2024, companies on NSE had a collective market cap of $5.4 trillion, making it the fourth-largest stock exchange globally. Holding a near-monopoly with 93% in the cash segment and 97% in equity derivatives, NSE surpasses most competitors. Its key index, the Nifty 50, is a globally acknowledged benchmark for India’s capital markets.

The unlisted shares of the exchange have gained traction ahead of its IPO, raising its market valuation to about Rs6 trillion, making NSE India’s ninth most valuable company even before listing. Analysts view Balachandran’s increased stake as strategically timed, anticipating significant value realization post-IPO.
Balachandran’s move comes amid growing global investor interest in India’s financial markets, highlighting his belief in NSE’s growth potential and the broader UAE-India investment corridor. Analysts see his actions as well-timed, with the NSE listing expected to unlock substantial value for current shareholders.
Discussing his investment approach, Balachandran has stressed the importance of partnering with high-growth, transparent institutions with long-term potential. His Dubai-based Buimerc Corporation has diversified interests across the US, EU, India, and the UAE.
This stake increase also indicates strengthening ties between India’s burgeoning financial sector and the UAE’s investment community. Balachandran, noted for his philanthropic and community leadership, has been pivotal in fostering economic and professional connections between the two nations.
