The Tristar Group has introduced a biofuel-electric bunkering barge to its fleet, marking the region’s first eco-friendly maritime innovation. Now operational at the Port of Fujairah, this vessel is time-chartered by TotalEnergies Marketing Middle East.

Eugene Mayne, CEO of Tristar Group, and Thomas Vigneron, Managing Director of TotalEnergies Marketing Middle East, unveiled the 750-cubic-metre Tristar Eco Voyager. The vessel boasts a hybrid engine combining electric and biofuel power, augmented by an advanced powertrain.

“Delivering this groundbreaking vessel is an honor, but the Tristar Eco Voyager transcends novelty,” Mayne stated. “It symbolizes our commitment to revolutionizing the maritime industry towards sustainable energy and low-carbon logistics. We are proud to lead by example.”

TotalEnergies Marketing Middle East, based in Dubai, has chartered the hybrid barge to enhance its Lubmarine division’s ship-to-ship operations in Fujairah.

Mayne highlighted the enduring collaboration between the companies: “Our long-standing partnership with TotalEnergies deepens with this pioneering solution, reinforcing our joint dedication to a sustainable future.”

Vigneron shared similar views: “Partnering with Tristar Group to launch the region’s first hybrid bunkering barge boosts our operational abilities and underscores our commitment to driving positive change in the UAE through sustainable innovation.”

The Tristar Eco Voyager’s cutting-edge hybrid propulsion system supports Tristar and TotalEnergies’ ambitions for cleaner shipping. Its engine, compatible with electricity and biofuels, offers flexibility and significantly reduces emissions. The barge is expected to cut CO2 emissions by about 35% compared to traditional models, and planned electric charging stations at the Port of Fujairah will allow near-complete electric operation and zero emissions while docked.

This pioneering barge solidifies the UAE’s dedication to sustainable solutions. In June 2024, Mayne presented the concept to UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan during a World Environment Day event at the Presidential Palace in Abu Dhabi. The discussion emphasized the UAE’s commitment to sustainability and the important roles of individuals, companies, and communities in combating climate change.

The Tristar Eco Voyager represents a practical, ready-to-implement solution for the maritime industry’s global shift towards low-carbon shipping and improved air quality in busy ports. As the first of its kind in the UAE and the GCC, it paves the way for decarbonization and encourages investments in green technologies.
