Trump on Drug Trafficking and Venezuela

Washington – Sputnik. Trump said at a public rally in Pennsylvania, “Because it is easier on the ground. And it [drug trafficking] is more widespread there.” The United States justifies its military presence in the Caribbean region by fighting drug trafficking. In September and October of last year, Washington repeatedly used its armed forces to destroy boats allegedly carrying drugs off the coast of Venezuela.

On November 3rd, Trump expressed his opinion that Nicolas Maduro’s days as the leader of Venezuela were numbered, while at the same time affirming that the United States does not intend to wage war on the republic.

For its part, Caracas considered these actions as provocations aimed at destabilizing the region and a violation of international agreements related to the status of the Caribbean as a demilitarized and nuclear-free zone.
