The U.S. Department of Homeland Security stated that under this measure, the Secretary of Homeland Security is terminating Ethiopia’s designation under the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) category, which was initially set to expire on December 12, 2025. After reviewing the conditions in Ethiopia and consulting with relevant U.S. government agencies, the Secretary decided that Ethiopia no longer meets the criteria for TPS designation. Consequently, the Secretary is ending Ethiopia’s TPS classification as mandated by law.

Since the beginning of Trump’s second term, America has consistently revoked TPS for several countries. In November 2025, the Trump administration announced its intention to terminate TPS for more than 4,000 Myanmar nationals in America, effective January 24, 2026, citing improved conditions in the country, according to a notice from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

The notice stated: “The U.S. Department of Homeland Security hereby announces through this notice that the Secretary of Homeland Security is terminating the Temporary Protected Status for Burma (Myanmar), with this status ending on November 25, 2025. Secretary Kristi Noem determined that Burma no longer meets the criteria for TPS designation.”

In May 2025, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced the termination of TPS for nearly 12,000 Afghan citizens, citing improved security conditions in Afghanistan. Later, in late June of the same year, they decided to revoke TPS for over 260,000 Haitians.

In July 2025, the Department of Homeland Security followed suit by canceling TPS for approximately 4,000 migrants from Nicaragua and 72,000 citizens from Honduras. In September, the U.S. administration terminated TPS for more than 6,000 Syrians.
