As the festive season approaches, UAE residents are eagerly seeking Schengen visas to enjoy Europe’s enchanting Christmas Villages and winter landscapes. Travel agencies report that visa appointments are nearly booked, with high demand extending available slots into the new year.

“Visas for Malta, Bulgaria, and Poland are still obtainable this month, but appointments for the Netherlands start in March and for Germany in January,” stated Subair Thekepurathvalappil, senior manager at Wisefox Tourism. “The demand is immense, and we’re struggling to secure enough appointment slots.”

According to Subair, destinations like the Czech Republic, Austria, Germany, Poland, and Finland are top choices this Christmas, known for Europe’s most famous Christmas villages and festive markets.

For many UAE residents, a December trip to Europe has become a cherished tradition, featuring strolls through fairy-lit cobblestone streets, sipping hot chocolate at market stalls, and experiencing snow for the first time.

Pavan Poojary, a travel consultant at Luxury Travels, noted that people are scheduling their holidays based on visa availability rather than the reverse. “Travelers are opting for later appointment dates as they plan their trips,” he explained. “European travel is surging this year and into early next year.”

Travel agents emphasize that those fortunate enough to secure December visa appointments should still plan carefully. “The earliest appointments available now are in the first week of December,” Poojary said. “Visa processing takes about 15 days, so travelers must act quickly to travel within the Christmas period.”

Top destinations

Among Schengen countries, Switzerland remains a top choice for UAE travelers this year, trailed by Italy, Spain, and France, known for their picturesque towns, serene nature, and festive spirit.

With Europe turning into a winter wonderland each December, many travelers are prepared to wait months for the experience. “People are applying now even for trips next year,” said Subair. “Securing a slot for Schengen countries is their priority.”

Travel experts recommend residents plan and apply early as Schengen country appointments are limited. Those unable to secure slots might consider lesser-known options like Bulgaria and Malta, where visas are still available.
