The UAE has reached a “strategic milestone” by successfully launching a satellite, as announced by the nation’s space agency on Wednesday.

Named Arab Satellite 813, it is the first Arab satellite equipped with hyperspectral imaging technology.

The name ‘813’ honors the year marking the rise of the House of Wisdom in Baghdad, a time seen as a beacon of scientific advancement in the Arab world. The mission seeks to revive that collaborative spirit by uniting Arab engineers in a single project for the first time.

This technology provides unprecedented capabilities to analyze environmental and climatic systems and monitor changes on Earth’s surface. Launching this satellite will nurture the skills of young Arab engineers and scientists in the realm of space science and technology.

The launch also promotes collaboration among Arab countries through joint space projects within the Arab Space Cooperation Group and supports Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) via Earth-observation technologies.

Salem Al Marri, Director of the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre, congratulated the team on the launch, stating, “Congratulations to the UAE Space Agency and the National Space Science and Technology Centre for the successful launch of Arab Satellite 813. This mission, created for all Arabs, is a significant step towards a future of collaboration and growth in our region’s space sector.”
