The spokesperson for the United Nations Secretary-General, Stéphane Dujarric, said on Tuesday that raids targeted the offices of food, health, and children’s agencies, demanding the immediate release of all detainees by the Houthis, according to Western media. Dujarric also warned that these actions undermine the delivery of aid to the Yemeni people.
In a statement published by the UN envoy on the mission’s official page on the platform “X” on Monday, UN Secretary-General António Guterres demanded the release of all UN employees, international and national non-governmental organizations, as well as civil society organizations and diplomatic missions detained in Yemen since 2024. The statement also called for the release of detainees since 2021 and 2023, emphasizing that the continued detention of humanitarian workers is unacceptable.
The statement highlighted Guterres’ warning against targeting United Nations employees and their partners while performing their duties, stressing the need to ensure their safety and security at all times. It is noteworthy that the Houthis indicated, following the killing of their Prime Minister and several ministers a few days ago, that this attack might be related to security breaches.
