The project failed to secure the 60 votes needed for approval, meaning American government institutions will remain closed, as shown by a broadcast from the American channel “C-SPAN.” The Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, stated on Wednesday that the current government shutdown is the second longest in U.S. history, blaming Democrats for the crisis.
Last Saturday, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the Republican Party does not intend to pay “1.5 trillion dollars” for illegal immigrants. According to the White House press office, it is noted that the new fiscal year in the United States began on October 1st without Congress being able to pass the budget, leading to the shutdown of the federal government.
A “government shutdown” means that several institutions and agencies directly funded by Congress cease operations due to the absence of a budget for the new fiscal year, a situation that recurs from time to time in the United States. Trump had previously stated that he might use the shutdown period to conduct mass layoffs and restructure some departments, pointing out that the crisis is due to the Democratic Party’s stance and that the White House will take advantage of the current situation to cancel programs that lack Republican support.
