The U.S. Treasury stated in a statement that “President Donald Trump affirmed that conditions have changed in Syria and there have been positive steps taken by the new government led by President Ahmed Shar’a.” It emphasized that “sanctions will remain in effect on human rights violators linked to chemical weapons and on terrorist organizations.”
President Donald Trump had declared that he lifted the sanctions that were imposed on Syria to give Damascus an opportunity to grow and move forward, according to him.
Trump said, “I do not know if Syria will normalize relations with Israel,” adding, “The decision to lift sanctions on Syria came at the request of some friendly countries in the region.”
