Abu Dhabi is rapidly evolving into a global testing ground for autonomous and cutting-edge technologies, as stated by Ahmed Jasim Al Zaabi, chairman of the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development (ADDED), on Monday, November 10.

“In the coming days, we will finalize 13 agreements for commercial pilots, and more are on the horizon. These commercial agreements are crucial, and swift execution is key. We won’t delay. Abu Dhabi is becoming the world’s sandbox. Today, that’s exactly what Abu Dhabi represents—a testing ground for global innovations,” Al Zaabi shared during a panel at Abu Dhabi Autonomous Week 2025.

A sandbox is a safe environment for testing new software or applications without risking the main system. With Abu Dhabi’s startup ecosystem booming, the sandbox’s importance is growing significantly.

“Our focus extends beyond smart and autonomous vehicles; we’re investing in 13 clusters. Smart and autonomous vehicles are critical, integrating advanced technology, talent, and robotics. The autonomous sector will be vital, impacting not just mobility but also manufacturing and other areas,” Al Zaabi added.

The UAE capital plans for 25% of all trips to be autonomous by 2040.

Efforts in Economic Diversification

Al Zaabi highlighted that these diversification initiatives have significantly reduced Abu Dhabi’s reliance on oil for GDP contribution.

“The launch of these clusters is part of our diversification strategy. Previously, Abu Dhabi’s economy was 20% non-oil and 80% oil. We’ve transformed that. Recently, we achieved 57% non-oil and 43% oil in GDP,” he noted.

Mohamed Ali Al Shorafa, chairman of the Department of Municipalities & Transport – Abu Dhabi, also attended the panel.

“To lead in every aspect, you must take risks wisely. Understanding risk management is crucial, and that’s where we stand today. This will be a significant aspect of Abu Dhabi and the UAE’s future leadership,” said Al Zaabi.
