Experts are emphasizing the importance of parenting and family values as the cornerstone of child development.
This focus was highlighted at a press conference on Tuesday, previewing Abu Dhabi Early Childhood Week 2025. This emirate-wide event will feature community-driven activities from November 17 to 23, under the theme “Together We Can Make Abu Dhabi a Family-friendly Emirate.”

The initiative aims to promote collaboration, collective action, and joyful connections within the community. It aligns with the UAE’s Year of Community, inviting residents to engage in family workshops, park play sessions, and creative learning pop-ups, all designed to enhance parent-child relationships through simple daily experiences.

Experts noted that early years—from pregnancy to age eight—are crucial for brain development, with 90% completed by age five. Research indicates that every dirham spent on early childhood yields Dh22.4 over a lifetime.
Speaking to Khaleej Times, Dr. Hessa Al Kaabi, Executive Director of Special Projects and Partnerships at the Early Childhood Authority (ECA), stated, “Parenting is more crucial now than ever, especially as families face multiple pressures, including digital screens. We want parents to feel supported; the government and community are here to assist them. This week is an open invitation for families to discover available resources and tools.”
She noted this year’s event will be the largest yet.
“Last year, we hosted around 70 activities. This year, we’re organizing over 170 across the emirate.”
The event highlights the societal benefits of investing in early childhood. In Abu Dhabi, 75% of parents report insufficient time with their children, while 70% of a child’s week is spent with domestic helpers. Only 1.1% of children of determination are identified early, highlighting the need for improved screening and support systems.
Leya Aldamani, Group Chief Sustainability Officer at PureHealth, emphasized the need for shared family spaces to reduce screen time.
“Research shows that about 73% of children spend a significant portion of their day on screens, contributing to rising obesity rates. We need more spaces where families can spend meaningful time together.”
Experts reiterated that formative years shape a child’s cognitive skills, emotional wellbeing, and lifelong potential. Just 30 minutes of quality interaction daily can significantly improve academic and emotional outcomes. Additionally, good nutrition during the first 1,000 days of life is vital for developing a healthy brain and body, while play encourages creativity, confidence, and problem-solving skills.
Dr. Mariam Al Hammadi, Director of Training and Continuing Education at the National Academy for Childhood Development (NACD), added, “Parenting, values, and nurturing are foundational to raising future generations. The UAE government continues to support this vision by providing parents access to programs integrating interactive and technological tools. Despite busy lives, parents remain the primary influence on their children’s growth.
