However, Russian scientists from the Polar Research Institute at the North and South Poles have warned of the significant shrinking of the massive iceberg over the last three months, according to Russia’s Pravda, reported on Monday. The site noted that the iceberg has lost about 36 percent of its volume, indicating that this level of fragmentation is the fastest since in the Antarctic continent. While statistics from last June indicated that the iceberg’s area was estimated at 2,730 square kilometers, the current area has shrunk to 1,750 square kilometers. It is noted that this iceberg separated from the Antarctic in 1986, with an initial area of about 4,170 square kilometers, and remained relatively stable for decades before it began to move and disintegrate rapidly since 2023, which has raised concerns among researchers about the fragility of icebergs in Antarctica amid the significant climatic changes the world is witnessing.
