Akash Kumar Choudhary from Meghalaya made history by becoming the first player ever to hit eight successive sixes in first-class cricket and reached a 50 in just 11 balls — the fastest half-century in the format — during a Ranji Trophy match against Arunachal Pradesh on Sunday.

The achievements were particularly noteworthy considering the 25-year-old is typically regarded as a fast bowler.

On the second day of the Indian domestic match in Surat, Choudhary came to bat with Meghalaya at 576-6.

After starting with a dot ball and two singles, Choudhary showcased an astonishing batting display by smashing six sixes off left-arm spinner Limar Dabi.

Despite becoming only the third man in first-class cricket to hit six sixes in a single over, joining the elite group of Garry Sobers and Ravi Shastri, he wasn’t finished.

He then cleared the boundary with the next two deliveries he faced, reaching 50 in just 11 balls and breaking the previous record by one ball. Leicestershire batsman Wayne White had previously achieved the milestone in 12 balls against Essex in 2012.
