Akash Kumar Choudhary from Meghalaya set a new record in first-class cricket by hitting eight consecutive sixes and scoring a rapid 11-ball 50, marking the fastest half-century in the format during a Ranji Trophy match against Arunachal Pradesh on Sunday.
These achievements are particularly notable as the 25-year-old is primarily known as a fast bowler.
On the second day of the Indian domestic match in Surat, Choudhary took the field with Meghalaya at 576-6.
After a cautious start with a dot ball and two singles, Choudhary unleashed an incredible performance, hitting six sixes off left-arm spinner Limar Dabi.
He became only the third player in first-class history to achieve six sixes in an over, joining the ranks of Garry Sobers and Ravi Shastri, yet he wasn’t finished.
Choudhary then continued his streak by hitting two more sixes, reaching his half-century in just 11 balls, surpassing the previous record of 12 balls set by Leicestershire’s Wayne White against Essex in 2012.
