Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim stated that his team must maintain the same level of urgency they demonstrated against Chelsea on Saturday to continue winning.
Having secured only one victory this season before the match, following their lowest top-flight league finish last season since being relegated in 1973-74, Amorim was under pressure ahead of Chelsea’s Premier League visit.
The early dismissal of Blues goalkeeper Robert Sanchez provided United with the opportunity to secure a crucial win, thanks to goals from Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro. However, the performance from the onset reached levels of intensity that had been missing in recent struggles.
“Sometimes we have moments where we feel an urgency to achieve a result,” Amorim said. “Today we won, and it’s nice to win, but let’s not forget to return to that urgency in our game.
“We need to win the next game. That is the most important thing. At this big club, it’s not a feeling that today was a really good game, so let’s relax a bit. Let’s keep that urgency. That is the most important feeling we must carry into the next week.”
In typical United fashion, the hosts still made things challenging for themselves from a seemingly secure position, leading 2-0 with a numerical advantage under the driving Manchester rain.
Casemiro’s sending-off late in the first half gave the visitors a lifeline, with Trevoh Chalobah’s header ensuring a tense finish at an expectant Old Trafford.
“We showed that when everything is going well, we find a way to make it difficult,” Amorim said. “But we suffered together in the end. That was a good thing, and if you look at the game, we deserved to win.
“We were trying to do things a little too much, making tackles that maybe we shouldn’t. It’s hard to say because that is the pressure. I sometimes feel more pressure on some young guys.
“Maybe it’s because Casemiro cares. We score one, and he makes that tackle. Sometimes it’s not the pressure; they wanted it too much in that moment.”
