Scores of dead fish were found in an Abu Dhabi canal, as reported by the emirate’s environment authority on Tuesday, December 1. They assured the public that safety measures were put in place following the incident.

Explaining the reason behind the deaths, the Environment Agency–Abu Dhabi stated that initial tests indicated a link to an algal bloom in the area. This bloom led to reduced levels of dissolved oxygen due to weak water circulation.

The dead fish were found in Al Muzoon Canal, the agency added. Measures were swiftly taken to address the situation and prevent any danger to the public, including collecting, transporting, and safely disposing of the dead fish.

Water and fish samples were also collected for testing as authorities continue to monitor the canal situation to determine the exact causes, the agency clarified.

A comprehensive technical assessment is currently underway by the agency, which mentioned that updates on the incident will be announced once further analysis is completed and test results become available.

In 2024, a similar incident occurred in Dubai when dead fish were detected in the emirate’s water channels. Environmental authorities assured the public at that time, stating that this was normal following the torrential rain and floods that hit the country.

On April 16, the UAE received the highest recorded rainfall, with Dubai receiving over 220mm in less than 24 hours — more than a year’s worth of rain in a single day.
