Numerous dead fish were discovered in an Abu Dhabi canal, as reported by the emirate’s environment authority on Tuesday, December 1. They assured the public that safety measures have been implemented following the incident.
The Environment Agency–Abu Dhabi explained that preliminary tests indicate the deaths are associated with an algal bloom in the area. This phenomenon caused reduced levels of dissolved oxygen due to poor water circulation.
The dead fish were found in Al Muzoon Canal, the agency noted. Immediate actions were taken to tackle the issue and ensure public safety, including collecting, transporting, and safely disposing of the deceased fish.

Similar Incident
In 2024, a similar occurrence happened in Dubai when dead fish were observed in the emirate’s water channels. Environmental authorities reassured the public at that time, attributing it to the heavy rain and floods that hit the country.
On April 16, the UAE experienced record-breaking rainfall. Dubai received over 220mm within less than 24 hours, exceeding a year’s average rainfall in just one day.
