The Israeli military announced on Thursday that it intercepted a missile launched from Yemen, where Houthi rebels have regularly carried out attacks, claiming they are in response to Israel’s offensive in Gaza.

“Following the sirens that sounded a short while ago in several areas in Israel, a missile launched from Yemen was intercepted by the IAF,” Israel’s army stated on Telegram, referencing the air force.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the missile attack.

However, the Houthi rebels have repeatedly launched missiles and drones at Israel since their Palestinian ally Hamas’s attack on Israel in October 2023 triggered the Gaza war.

The Houthis, who assert they are supporting the Palestinians, paused their attacks during a two-month ceasefire in Gaza that concluded in March but resumed them after Israel restarted major operations.

Israel has conducted multiple retaliatory strikes in Yemen, targeting Houthi-held ports and the airport in the rebel-controlled capital, Sanaa.

Israeli air strikes on Houthi-held Yemen on Wednesday resulted in 35 deaths and over 130 injuries, as reported by the rebels, following days after their prime minister and half the cabinet died in a major attack.
