Sunil’s Wedding Ordeal: Passport Battle and Ceremony Plans

He is back home and met his ‘wife’ and will be tying the wedding knot by himself on September 19.

On August 27, Khaleej Times had published a report about Sunil who missed his wedding since his company denied him leave and did not release his passport.

His bride Vidya, a CT-Scan technician in Bangalore, was eventually forced to accept the ‘pudava’ (an ethnic sari) as an acknowledgment of the marriage from his sister Suma at the auspicious time at the St Antony’s Parish Hall in a village in Kerala’s Pathanamthitta district.

Speaking to Khaleej Times from Kerala on Monday, Sunil, a security guard, said he managed to go home on Friday early morning after he got back his passport through a legal fight. He said he filed a petition to the Dubai Court of First Instance seeking the urgent release of his passport from the company.

Advocate Shamsudeen Karunagappally, Sunil’s lawyer, said the court the next day ordered Al Rafa police to get Sunil’s passport released from the Dubai office of his company. “The police accompanied us to the company office. But they sought time to bring the passport from their Abu Dhabi main office. So, the next day, Thursday, when the police called them, the manager of the Dubai office produced his passport,” he said.

Sunil said he would do the customary ‘thaalikettu’, a Hindu ritual of a groom tying a knot on a necklace around the bride’s neck, at an auspicious time on September 19.

“I went to my wife’s home yesterday with some elders and consoled everybody there. I brought her to visit my home also. But, we will be staying together only after the actual wedding,” he said.

The case that Sunil had filed against his company is coming up for hearing on August 26 at a labour court. He has authorised his lawyer to be present for him.
