Arsenal emerged stronger after learning valuable lessons from their dramatic 2-1 win against Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Sunday. Coach Mikel Arteta praised his team’s determination, believing it could propel them to the league title.
Trailing until the 84th minute, Arsenal seemed destined to leave Tyneside empty-handed after a challenging afternoon. However, late headers from Mikel Merino and Gabriel secured a crucial victory, pushing Arsenal to second place, just two points behind Liverpool, and significantly boosting the team’s confidence.
“We fully deserved the win,” Arteta shared with Sky Sports. “Our gameplay, performance, and competitive spirit were outstanding. We created numerous chances and though it was dramatic, the victory was well-earned.
“The bravery, determination, and quality of play today were remarkable. To reach the next level, you must come to such venues and showcase your conviction and desire.”
Arsenal faced frustration due to missed chances, exceptional saves by Newcastle’s Nick Pope, and a VAR decision overturning a penalty after Viktor Gyokeres seemed fouled.
Arteta expressed his frustration with the VAR’s decision once again.
“If it’s not a clear and obvious error, VAR shouldn’t intervene. It’s evident that VAR shouldn’t have interfered because it was a penalty,” Arteta remarked about the incident.
Such setbacks only intensified the sweetness of the victory.
“That’s how you elevate to another level. By enduring these moments and learning from them, it was a significant opportunity to demonstrate our identity.
“You must come here and win. Finding a way to succeed was incredible.”
