Boxing Legend Ricky Hatton Found Dead at 46

Former boxing world champion Ricky Hatton was found hanged at his residence, as a coroner’s court reported on Thursday during the opening and adjournment of his inquest.

The 46-year-old, known as the “Hitman”, was discovered “unresponsive” on September 14 by his manager Paul Speak at his Greater Manchester home, according to Manchester South Coroner’s Court.

Details were shared by police coroner’s officer Alison Catlow about the discovery of Hatton’s body.

The court learned that the ex-British fighter, who clinched world titles in light-welterweight and welterweight, was last seen by his family on September 12 and appeared “well” at that time.

However, he missed an event the following day, and on the morning of the 14th, his manager went to his home to take him to Manchester Airport for a Dubai flight. Hatton was found unresponsive.

“The provisional cause of death is hanging,” stated coroner Alison Mutch.

The inquest was adjourned until March 20 next year.

Last week, thousands gathered in Manchester streets for Hatton’s funeral procession, honoring the beloved, larger-than-life figure.

Oasis’s frontman Liam Gallagher, former England and Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney, and former world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury were among the notable attendees from sports and entertainment at the service.

Hatton was open about his mental health struggles after retiring from boxing following a 2012 comeback attempt.

In a 2016 BBC interview, he discussed his battles with alcohol and drugs, revealing multiple suicide attempts.

After participating in a no-scoring exhibition with Mexico’s Marco Antonio Barrera in 2022, Hatton announced in July he would fight professionally in Dubai in December.
