UAE Students Prepare for Oxford Journey

Sara Fekri, an Emirati student at King’s College London, is finishing her BSc (Honours) in Physics and plans to pursue an MSc in Mathematical and Theoretical Physics at the University of Oxford.

Gustė Gurčinaitė, from Lithuania, is studying at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) and will complete her BA in political science. She aims to do an MPhil in environmental change and management at Oxford.

Both students, chosen for their outstanding intellect and leadership, applied for scholarships in June 2022, competing with over 60 other applicants.

The academic year for the two will begin in October 2023.

In 2021, Emirati Rashid Alrafie and NYUAD’s Uljad Berdica were named 2022 UAE Rhodes Scholars.

Since 2014, 18 students from the UAE have received this prestigious scholarship.

The UAE Rhodes scholarship selection committee, chaired by Omar Saif Ghobash, includes Shamma Bint Suhail Faris Al Mazrui and Dr. Robert Buckley, among others. They interviewed nine finalists in Abu Dhabi, marking the first in-person meeting since the pandemic.

“At eight, my mother told me my father hoped I’d attend a top university. By 17, I focused on admission to a leading institution. Visiting Oxford, I met Rhodes Scholars and dreamed of applying as an Emirati. I’m proud the UAE offers this chance to eligible students,” said Omar Saif Ghobash.
