A press release on the ministry’s website stated: “From May 6 to May 13, 2025, a research program approved by the Ministry of Culture was conducted, within which selective retrieval of objects from the crash site at a depth of more than 120 meters was carried out for the first time.” The ship in question is the “Britannic,” belonging to the same series of transatlantic liners as the “Titanic,” and served as a floating hospital during World War I. In November 1916, the Britannic struck a German mine and sank off the coast of the Greek island of Kea. However, as mentioned in the press release, some items that divers intended to retrieve were not brought to the surface due to strong currents, great depth, and poor visibility. The raised items will be exhibited in the National Maritime Archaeology Museum, which is under construction in Piraeus.
