Cameron Green, the versatile player, is set to resume bowling in the Sheffield Shield, providing a boost for Australia ahead of the Ashes against England.
After a long break due to back surgery, Green has focused solely on batting but is now gradually increasing his bowling workload in training sessions.
Although Australia faces India in a limited-overs series in October and November, Green might choose to play more red-ball cricket for Western Australia to enhance his bowling skills before the Ashes.
“Focusing on Shield cricket has been beneficial in the past,” Green mentioned to reporters in Mackay on Thursday.
“That might be the best approach, especially as I work back into bowling, to get in more overs over several days.”
Australia will be cautious not to overuse Green, who previously missed the home Test series against India due to lumbar spine surgery.
If fully fit, Green would be a tremendous asset for Australia in their quest to retain the Ashes against England.
Green has claimed 18 wickets in eight matches against England, averaging 24.44, compared to his overall career average of 35.31.
Recently, his batting contributions have been crucial for Australia.
His 184 runs on challenging pitches during the West Indies Test tour significantly helped Pat Cummins’s team to a 3-0 series win.
Green commented that he wasn’t overly focused on his batting form from the Caribbean tour.
“I doubt we’ll encounter many pitches like that this summer, so there aren’t many lessons to take,” he said.
“It was a tough wicket, particularly for batters — finishing the series without major issues was a good achievement.”
The first Ashes Test is scheduled in Perth on November 21.
