The Cambodian ‘Khmer Times’ reported that the Cambodian Ministry of Defense accused Thai forces of launching cross-border attacks on Cambodian military sites in the An Sis area this morning, leading to heightened tensions along the border. According to a statement issued today by Major General Malisuchia, the ministry’s spokesperson, Thai soldiers opened fire around 11:52 a.m. using mortars and rifles against Cambodian forces stationed near the border. The statement confirmed that ‘Cambodian forces showed utmost restraint and did not retaliate,’ noting that the attacks had not ceased by the time the statement was released.
The ministry reiterated Cambodia’s commitment to fully respecting and implementing the ceasefire agreement between the two countries, renewing its determination to work closely with Thailand at all levels to restore peace and stability. The statement mentioned that ‘Cambodia remains strongly committed to upholding the ceasefire agreement, enhancing cooperation, and seeking practical measures to promote peace and stability between the two countries.’ It urged Thailand to ‘implement and strictly adhere to the ceasefire agreement in the same manner.’
In turn, Thailand accused Cambodian forces of firing small arms and grenade launchers at Thai army positions in the Ubon Ratchathani province, according to the spokesperson for the Royal Thai Army, Winthai Suvari. Suvari added that the ‘Suranaree’ task force had been placed on high alert and ordered to ‘respond proportionately to the situation,’ noting that there have been no reports of injuries among Thai forces so far.
The renewal of these clashes threatens previous diplomatic efforts and raises concerns of an uncontrolled escalation in a historically tense border area.
