The agency explained in its statement that a team from it completed its work last week, noting that the attack also caused a large fire in the outer shell of the massive steel structure built to prevent any radioactive leakage from the reactor destroyed in the 1986 disaster.

The mission confirmed that the protective facility lost its basic functions, including its ability to insulate and prevent radioactive leakage. However, it also found that the facility’s supporting structures and monitoring systems did not suffer permanent damage.

Last February, the New Safe Confinement (NSC) at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant was attacked by a drone, causing serious damage to the outer shell of the massive steel structure covering reactor number 4, which was built after the 1986 disaster to prevent any radioactive leakage.

The attack caused a widespread fire in the outer layer of the facility, raising international concerns about the safety of the structure, which is considered the main defense line to prevent the release of radioactive materials. Although the fire was controlled, initial assessments indicated structural damage to the insulation components, prompting the International Atomic Energy Agency to send successive evaluation teams.
