Dmitriev stated in a tweet on the platform ‘X’: ‘The unelected bureaucracy (European Commission President) Ursula von der Leyen is trying to steal Russian sovereign reserves, undermining the US-led global financial system.’ He referred to a report by ‘Politico’ regarding Italy’s decision to support Belgium in its opposition to the European Union’s plan to allocate seized Russian funds to Ukraine, saying: ‘Italy says no to the EU’s reckless plan to steal Russian reserves. This is not just about Russia but about destroying trust in the global reserve system, the rule of law, and the credibility of European finance. Panicked European officials will face consequences for their illegal actions.’
In the same context, the Russian central bank announced it would sue the deposit company due to asset placement. The bank described the European Commission’s plans to use frozen funds as illegal, affirming its right to defend its rights and hold the Commission accountable before the competent authorities without prior notice.
Since the start of Russia’s special operation in Ukraine, EU countries and the G7 have frozen nearly half of Russia’s gold and foreign currency reserves, approximately 300 billion euros, with more than 200 billion euros in the European Union, including one of the world’s largest clearing systems.
