Dubai Launches Contactless Hotel Check-Ins

Hotel check-ins in Dubai are about to become quicker and more seamless with the introduction of a one-time, contactless system throughout the city. Hospitality industry experts believe this technology will eliminate one of the most tiresome aspects of vacationing for tourists.

“The adoption of digital biometric check-ins at hotels is not just a tech upgrade; it’s a transformation of the guest experience in Dubai,” stated Julia Schamne, Cluster General Manager at Novotel & Adagio Premium Dubai Al Barsha. “For guests, it removes the most exhausting part of travel: waiting in line. They can enter their stay securely, efficiently, and with full control.”

Currently, many hotels require guests to check in at the front desk, present their documents, and wait for the staff to complete check-in before accessing their rooms. The new system will allow guests to bypass these steps and proceed directly to their accommodations.

Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, and Chairman of the Executive Council of Dubai, approved the rollout of contactless check-in technology across the emirate on Tuesday.

Reduced Workload

Mohamed Rashad, Hotel Manager at Grand Millennium Hotel Dubai, mentioned that this initiative will significantly reduce staff workload.

“This system will offer customers a faster, smoother, and entirely digital arrival experience, eliminating queues, paperwork, and waiting at reception,” he said. “It streamlines arrivals, cutting down front-desk workload, and provides a quicker, more seamless guest experience. By allowing guests to complete check-in remotely and enabling repeat guests to authenticate instantly through biometrics, hotels can enhance service efficiency, improve guest satisfaction, and redirect staff towards more personalized interactions.”

Julia agreed, stating, “When arrival formalities are automated and secure, hotels have the freedom to allocate human interaction where it counts most: personalizing stays, enhancing service, and addressing real guest needs. It introduces a new operational rhythm. Front-desk teams can focus on meaningful interactions instead of administrative tasks, peak-time congestion significantly reduces, and we gain a more precise, real-time understanding of guest flow.”

How It Works

The authorities explained how the digital hotel check-in system functions:

  • Upload Documents: Guests upload essential identification documents via their phones using an app. They also submit biometric data like facial recognition. This information is uploaded only once.

  • Digital Check-In: Guests can complete all check-in steps before arriving at the hotel.

  • Arrival: Upon arrival, guests can go directly to their rooms at participating hotels without stopping at the check-in desk.

  • Secure Storage: Uploaded data is securely stored and remains valid until the guest’s ID expires.

  • Future Stays: For future visits, guests only need a quick check, like facial recognition, unless their ID has expired.

The system is already implemented in hotels and holiday homes throughout Dubai and can be integrated into existing hotel apps or websites. It will soon be expanded to other tourism services, and in the future, might be used for car rentals and other services requiring identity verification.
