Augustin Friedel, a partner at Porsche AG, began by commending Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) for its pioneering efforts in self-driving mobility. These initiatives aim to fulfill the emirate’s goal of converting 25% of all city transport to autonomous journeys by 2030. He praised the RTA’s ambitious, well-organized plans and their dedication to leveraging the latest technology through ongoing partnerships with global manufacturers, especially Chinese firms that have significant market presence in the Middle East and Europe.

Friedel also emphasized the robust capabilities of autonomous vehicle manufacturers from various brands and countries. He highlighted the necessity of expanding and diversifying investments, especially in autonomous fleets and fleet management. He observed that the sector is witnessing unprecedented growth, spurred by innovation, talent, ambition, and foresight to achieve global excellence. In closing, Friedel noted that the Middle East, with the UAE and Dubai leading, is one of the most dynamic regions for the deployment of autonomous mobility technologies.

He attributed this to the strategic initiatives and strong plans set by the region’s transport leaders. He also mentioned that self-driving technology is a priority for all equipment manufacturers, beyond just light vehicle producers, as it symbolizes the next revolution in the automotive industry. While it promises new revenue streams, it also challenges traditional business models. As a result, stakeholders are actively working to overcome technological barriers, address safety issues, and resolve operational challenges.
