The Dubai Municipality has intensified its oversight of food served in schools throughout the emirate to protect students’ health as the new academic year begins.
Inspections are conducted in kindergartens, nurseries, and schools by a dedicated team of food safety officers, covering 456 institutions each year. These field visits are bolstered by continuous monitoring via the “DM Checked” platform, which evaluates canteen performance and reviews menus to ensure compliance with the city’s nutrition and food safety standards.
Officials have stated that immediate actions are taken in cases of non-compliance, such as product withdrawal, circulation bans, and mandating corrective measures from schools.

Canteens must adhere to the Smart Food Choices System, classifying items into four categories — green, yellow, red, and black — to restrict unhealthy foods and promote fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, water, and low-fat milk.
In addition to food inspections, the Municipality conducts broader facility checks, including air-conditioning and ventilation systems, swimming pools, and water supply networks. Reports on water tank cleaning and sterilization are regularly reviewed, and school uniforms are inspected for compliance with approved standards.
Training workshops are organized for canteen staff and nutrition officers, while awareness sessions aim to encourage students to adopt healthy eating habits and reduce food waste.
