Dubai has achieved a significant reduction in pedestrian fatalities and accidents, with deaths dropping from 9.5 per 100,000 people in 2007 to just 0.3 in 2024, marking a 97% decrease.

This improvement follows Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announcing the completion of new pedestrian and cyclist bridges, alongside plans for 23 more by 2030. Mattar Al Tayer, director-general and chairman of the RTA board, emphasized these initiatives are part of Dubai’s strategy to improve road safety.

The RTA reported that its comprehensive infrastructure projects boosted pedestrian trips from 307 million in 2023 to 326 million in 2024, a 6% rise. Cycling trips also increased, from 44 million in 2023 to 46.6 million in 2024, a 5% uptick.

New Bridges and Future Plans

As part of its ongoing efforts, the RTA completed two pedestrian bridges on Sheikh Rashid Street and Al Mina Street, equipped with lifts, staircases, and advanced monitoring systems under the Al Shindagha Corridor Improvement Project.

Additionally, six pedestrian and cyclist bridges have been built across key Dubai streets. Five of these will open by year-end, with the sixth ready by early 2027.

The pedestrian and cyclist bridges on Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road strategically connect Al Sufouh and Dubai Hills through Dubai Internet City, Al Barsha Heights, and Al Barsha 3. These bridges feature a five-metre width with a dedicated three-metre track for cyclists and e-scooter users, and a two-metre path for pedestrians.

Other developing bridges include one on Al Manara Street in Al Quoz Creative Zone, featuring accessibility ramps, and two major crossings—one on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road at Tunis Street intersection, and another on Dubai–Al Ain Road linking Wadi Al Safa 4 with Dubai Silicon Oasis.

The sixth bridge, part of the Future Street Improvement Project on Al Sukook Street in Dubai’s Central Business District, is anticipated to be completed by early 2027.

Looking forward, the RTA plans to start constructing nine more pedestrian bridges by 2028. These include crossings near Coca-Cola Arena, in Business Bay, and on Sheikh Zayed Road near Burj Khalifa, along with six bridges on Al Asayel Street.
