The study explained that these devices create an ideal environment for fungal growth due to their closed plastic design, the heat generated from usage, and neglect in regular cleaning, according to the ‘New Scientist’ website. The study, which focused on a previously unstudied aspect, confirmed that the nozzles of e-cigarettes could harbor harmful microbes. Dr. Jason Smith, one of the researchers, stated that residual liquids inside the devices form a perfect breeding ground for mold, increasing health risks.
Among the contaminated samples, it was found that 80% contained fungi capable of causing chronic respiratory diseases, such as chronic bronchitis, associated with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). The fungus ‘Cystobasidium minutum’ was the most common, a type that can cause serious blood infections in individuals with weakened immunity.
In a laboratory experiment, mice exposed to vapor containing this fungus showed symptoms similar to chronic bronchitis, reinforcing concerns about the effects of these fungi on users’ health. Researchers urged e-cigarette users to regularly clean the nozzles to reduce fungal buildup, emphasizing the need for further studies to determine if these microorganisms are present in sufficient quantities to cause serious respiratory diseases.
