Egypt is poised to reclaim its place on the global golf stage with a lineup of tournaments for amateurs and professionals set to unfold over the next few months. This strategic initiative aims to revive the nation’s prestigious golfing heritage.
During a press conference at the iconic Mena House course, with the Pyramids as a breathtaking backdrop, Omar Hisham, President of the Egyptian Golf Federation, outlined the Federation’s future plans for golf in Egypt.
“Announcing this from the heart of the Pyramids was deliberate, as this site represents heritage and tradition, much like Egypt’s storied golf history,” Hisham explained.
“We boast a century-long legacy, ranking us among the world’s pioneers in this sport.”
The event calendar kicks off with the 104th Egyptian Men’s Amateur Open at Dreamland Golf Club in Cairo, followed by the Egyptian Open for Juniors and Amateur Ladies at New Giza Golf Club, highlighting the Federation’s dedication to youth and women’s golf.
The eagerly awaited return of the Egyptian Open, one of the oldest professional tournaments in the Middle East and Africa, is particularly notable. After a 15-year break, this historic event, first held in 1921, will appear on the Asian Development Tour (ADT), a pathway to the Asian Tour, offering a $125,000 prize. Another ADT event, also with a $125,000 purse, will occur soon, with the location to be announced.
Hisham reflected on the Federation’s recent triumphs:
“We grew our player base by 25% and organized the Arab Junior and Ladies Championship at Madinaty Golf Club, showcasing our capability to host world-class tournaments.”
These successes, he noted, were supported by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, along with partnerships with the Arab Golf Federation (AGF) and the Asian Tour.
Hisham stressed that beyond sports, the events will bolster golf tourism, an area where Egypt excels due to its top-tier courses, perpetual sunshine, and historic landmarks.
“Our ultimate aim is to catapult Egyptian players onto the global stage,” he concluded. “Each tournament provides international exposure and improves rankings, inching them closer to Olympic participation. We aspire for Egypt to have a strong presence in global golf.”
