The European Union countries have banned a substance found in some types of nail polish called “Trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide” (TPO), which is used as a catalytic agent to help the polish harden when exposed to ultraviolet light. According to EU regulations, this substance is considered “toxic for reproduction category 1B,” meaning it may cause infertility or harm fertility based on evidence derived from animal experiments.
Under the new decision, companies in the EU are no longer allowed to use or market any products containing this substance. Even the quantities available before September 1st cannot be sold or distributed in any commercial form.
The decision has sparked widespread debate and raised questions about the safety of this type of polish commonly used in beauty salons. The European Commission confirmed that there are types of “gel” nail polish available on the market that do not contain TPO, although they are more expensive.
