EU to Ban Russian Gas Contracts from 2026

According to the European Commission’s proposal, new contracts for the supply of Russian gas will be banned starting from 2026. The current short-term contracts will expire in mid-June 2026, and the long-term contracts will expire on January 1, 2027. This proposal will be presented for approval in the trilateral negotiations between the European Parliament, the European Council, and the European Commission.

In 2021, the European Parliament issued a statement urging its members to prepare against Russia. According to a statement published by ‘Sputnik’, the European Parliament called on member states to be ready against Russia.

Russia has repeatedly stated that the West made a grave mistake by refusing its supplies, which will lead to a more severe dependency due to rising prices. Russia pointed out that the refusers are still purchasing at higher prices through intermediaries.
