“In my day, chalk dust would create clouds in the classroom as we cleaned the board.” Do you often share stories with your child about your school days and how different the learning tools were? Now, you can show them.

From wooden desks to vintage, boxy computers, residents of the UAE can take their children on a journey back to the 1990s classroom at an exhibition organized by Dubai’s Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA).

Experience writing on a chalkboard again, watching old cartoons with their glitchy colors, and loading thick cassettes into a video recorder in this interactive exhibit at City Centre Mirdif, open until August 31.

Evolution of Educational Tools

Over the years, the blackboard with white chalk gave way to whiteboards with black markers. Erasing became less dusty, but markers left stains on hands.

A decade later, whiteboards evolved too. Schools introduced smartboards, bringing a significant shift in educational tools.

No longer just for reading and writing, teachers could now show educational videos, present PowerPoint slides without projectors, and conduct online quizzes.

In 2025, the UAE is at the forefront of education innovation, becoming one of the first to integrate AI learning at every stage of education.

As the 2025-26 academic year commenced, public schools across the UAE introduced AI as a formal subject, starting from Kindergarten through Grade 12.
