Washington – Sputnik. Fox News previously reported, based on a document from the FBI, that Smith, who took over the investigation into Trump’s cases after being appointed during former President Joe Biden’s administration, monitored the personal communications and phone calls of several Republican senators, including Lindsey Graham (classified in Russia as a terrorist and extremist). Since November 2022, this included the case of illegally possessing classified documents and attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 elections. The investigations were dropped after Trump’s victory in the elections, as a sitting president cannot be held accountable while in office. In January, Sputnik reported that Smith officially resigned before Trump’s inauguration. It is noted that Trump became the first elected U.S. president to undergo criminal investigations and be convicted in one of the cases, where he was sentenced to “unconditional release.” On January 6, 2021, Trump’s supporters stormed the Capitol building during the session to certify the 2020 presidential election results, leading to a wave of arrests and an attempt to impeach him later. After his inauguration in 2025, Trump issued an executive order pardoning about 1,500 people convicted in the storming case, pledging to invite them to the White House.
