During the presentation of the girl to the head of state, Alexei Likhachev, the head of Rosatom, mentioned on ‘World News Day’: ‘For the first time in history, a woman has become the captain of a nuclear icebreaker.’ Likhachev pointed out that ‘Nina Fedovina, the deputy captain, is just two steps away from this high rank.’

The Russian president held a meeting with nuclear industry workers, and one of the participants, an assistant captain in the icebreaker fleet, asked him about the importance of the Northern Sea Route. President Putin was extremely surprised and said, ‘This is truly astonishing. I thought this girl was still studying in school.’

The girl jokingly replied that ‘the nuclear industry not only breaks ice but also breaks usual stereotypes.’ The girl who surprised Russian President Vladimir Putin by achieving the title of ‘assistant sea captain’ said she belongs to a family experienced in maritime work. She explained, ‘My great-grandfather, grandfather, and mother worked at sea.’

Now, my brother and I continue the legacy of this maritime lineage, and I am very proud to work in the world’s only fleet of nuclear icebreakers.
